Mohammed Hashim

Managing DirectorMohammed Hashim is the Managing Director of Knight R&D with an MSc and BSc (Hons) in Software Engineering. He began his career as a front-end developer before moving into R&D tax consultancy in 2013, later working at firms including KPMG and Grant Thornton where he supported FTSE 100 companies and multinational organisations such as Shell and global banks.
With over 11 years of experience in R&D tax, Mohammed specialises in software engineering claims, R&D tax legislation, and enquiry resolution, maintaining a strong track record of successful claim defences. Since joining Knight R&D in its first year of trading, he has played a key role in shaping the firm’s growth, helping transform it into a structured, process-driven consultancy.
Outside of work, Mohammed values time with his family, his faith, and his interest in watches. He is particularly proud of the collaborative and supportive culture built at Knight R&D.

Tej Gajjar

DirectorTej Gajjar is a Senior Manager at Knight R&D with a BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology and nearly a decade of experience in R&D tax consultancy. He began his career at EY before holding roles at a mid-tier firm and KPMG, where he managed complex engagements for major clients including Shell and JP Morgan across sectors such as pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, and engineering.
At Knight R&D, Tej works closely with leadership to support the firm’s growth, improve delivery processes, and mentor the wider team. He specialises in science and engineering claims outside of software and has extensive experience in resolving HMRC enquiries, maintaining a strong track record of successful outcomes.
Outside of work, Tej enjoys playing and watching cricket and values the collaborative, ambitious culture at Knight R&D that encourages professional growth and meaningful impact.

William Fish

Senior ManagerWilliam Fish is a Senior R&D Tax Manager at Knight R&D with a BSc (Hons) in Creative Computing. After graduating, he chose to pursue a role that combined his interest in technology with consulting rather than traditional programming, leading him into R&D tax consultancy.
William specialises in software and cutting-edge technologies, particularly areas where software and hardware intersect such as IoT and data-driven systems. He maintains a strong focus on emerging technology trends to support clients operating at the forefront of innovation.
He has also successfully supported complex HMRC enquiries, including securing a full defence for a client’s claim in the Awaken Intelligence enquiry. William values the autonomy and trust within the Knight R&D team, which enables both personal development and strong client outcomes.

Matthew Murphy

Senior ManagerMatthew Murphy is a Senior Manager at Knight R&D with a First Class Honours degree in Computer Science. He joined the firm in 2019 as a Consultant and has progressed through several roles, becoming Senior Manager in 2025.
Matthew specialises in IT and Software Engineering, supporting businesses from early-stage startups to multinational companies with R&D tax claims, including successfully defending claims during HMRC compliance checks. He has also contributed to the firm’s growth by helping implement internal processes, training, and people management initiatives.
Outside of work, Matthew is a dedicated Everton season ticket holder and enjoys keeping fit and playing golf.

Alex Brett
Manager×Alex Brett
ManagerAlex Brett is an R&D Tax Manager at Knight R&D with a Master’s degree in Chemistry. He spent more than three years working as a research scientist in the water industry before moving into R&D tax consultancy, where he now has over five years of experience.
Alex works across a wide range of R&D tax engagements, with particular expertise in the costing aspects of claims, helping clients understand eligible expenditure and appropriate assessment methodologies. He has also supported the development of internal processes, including implementing a tax documentation checklist that has helped strengthen the team’s delivery and confidence.
Outside of work, Alex enjoys snooker and tennis and is currently undertaking ATT training as he continues to develop his professional expertise.

Jeff Vernes
Manager×Jeff Vernes
ManagerJeff Vernes is a Manager at Knight R&D with a background in applied mathematics, computational biology, and bioengineering, as well as a Certified Management Accountant qualification. His career began in corporate finance and consulting with NM Rothschild and AlphaSights, followed by nearly a decade in early-stage drug development startups in analytical and operational roles.
Jeff later moved into R&D tax consultancy, working at Knight R&D and EY before rejoining Knight R&D in 2024 as a Manager. He works with clients across a wide range of sectors, with a particular interest in engineering-led businesses.
Jeff has significant experience supporting clients through complex HMRC enquiries, helping them clearly articulate their R&D activities while preserving the value of their claims. Outside of work, he enjoys flying aeroplanes, scuba diving, and riding motorcycles, interests that reflect his appreciation for structured processes and disciplined risk management.

Senior ConsultantShammi Adatia is a Senior Consultant at Knight R&D with a BEng in Biomedical Engineering. His career began in life sciences consultancy before returning to the biomedical engineering sector as a technician, eventually transitioning into R&D tax consultancy where he combines his technical expertise with client-facing advisory work.
Shammi specialises in supporting engineering and manufacturing clients, particularly those involved in product development, process optimisation, and materials innovation. He has also successfully supported clients through detailed HMRC enquiries by clearly articulating complex technical work against legislative criteria.

R&D Tax ConsultantKyle Collins is an R&D Tax Consultant at Knight R&D with a PhD in Chemistry. He was introduced to the company through a former academic colleague and has since applied his analytical background to supporting R&D tax claims.
Kyle specialises in costing and data analysis, bringing a strong numerical and analytical approach to client work and helping ensure claims are delivered accurately and on time.

Before joining Knight, he spent eight years working as a Senior Scientist in consumer goods manufacturing, leading new product development projects and working closely with clients to bring technical concepts to market.
His client-side experience with R&D tax relief sparked his interest in the field and led him to transition into consultancy. Jake now applies his technical and project management background to support innovative businesses, particularly within manufacturing and process-driven industries.
Outside of work, Jake enjoys producing electronic music, particularly drum & bass, house, jungle, and breaks, and has a strong interest in using software and AI tools to enhance his creative workflow.
