Overview

Magellan Robotech Limited develops high-performance, gamified software platforms that leverage artificial intelligence, distributed computing, and real-time simulation technologies. Operating within the technically demanding iGaming sector, Magellan’s systems must support globally distributed users while delivering immersive, synchronised, and computationally intensive simulation environments.

Sustaining this level of performance requires continual advancement across simulation engines, data architectures, and deployment frameworks. Recognising the depth of technical innovation embedded within their projects, Magellan engaged Knight R&D to identify, structure, and defend their qualifying R&D activities.

The technical challenge

Magellan’s engineering teams were not simply developing new features. They were attempting to resolve fundamental technological uncertainties within real-time simulation environments operating at scale.

Their platforms required deterministic yet dynamic AI-driven behaviours across concurrent simulations. Multiple intelligent agents needed to operate simultaneously within complex 3D environments, maintaining synchronisation without compromising performance. Advanced pathfinding and collision-avoidance algorithms had to coordinate more than 80 agents in real time, under variable load conditions and evolving environmental parameters.

Beyond simulation logic, the company faced architectural uncertainty around how to design multi-region infrastructure capable of provisioning application instances dynamically, without introducing service disruption. Deployment pipelines needed to integrate modern distributed systems alongside legacy components, while preserving data integrity and eliminating latency conflicts.

These were not routine engineering refinements. They required architectural experimentation, algorithmic advancement, and iterative performance optimisation to achieve scalable, reliable real-time execution.

Knight R&D’s approach

We worked closely with Magellan’s technical and project leads to isolate areas of genuine technological uncertainty and distinguish them from standard software development.

Our role was to deconstruct complex simulation and infrastructure projects into clearly articulated advancements in computer science and software engineering. This included analysing the development of AI-driven decision engines, probabilistic modelling frameworks, advanced pathfinding algorithms, multi-threaded processing techniques, and scalable infrastructure-as-code deployment systems.

Each advancement was assessed against HMRC’s legislative criteria, with careful attention given to evidencing why the solutions were not readily deducible by a competent professional. The resulting submission translated highly complex engineering into a structured, defensible technical narrative.

The outcome

The claim secured significant tax relief, reflecting the scale and complexity of Magellan’s investment in advanced software engineering.

Importantly, the process also established a clearer internal framework for identifying and documenting future R&D activity. By aligning engineering innovation with legislative interpretation, Magellan strengthened both its financial position and its ability to support future claims with confidence.

Why this matters

High-performance simulation environments often contain substantial qualifying R&D, particularly where AI, algorithm engineering, distributed infrastructure, and real-time processing intersect.

Magellan’s work demonstrates that meaningful technological advancement frequently occurs within complex system optimisation and architectural problem-solving — areas that can easily be overlooked without careful technical analysis.

At Knight R&D, our role is to ensure that innovation of this depth is recognised, structured, and defended appropriately.
